Ed Benguiat

Ephram Edward ( Ed ) Benguiat ( born October 27, 1927 in New York, NY, USA) is an American calligrapher, graphic designer and an important type designers. He lives in Brooklyn.

Biography

His father was ad director at Bloomingdale's. Thus he was able early on to gain experience in the design, since he came to work all utensils. From these experiences, he has made use for the first time in World War II: In order to get into the army, he has forged his birth certificate. However, this has not influenced him in his choice of profession. Actually, Ed Benguiat professional drummer with a diploma from the Brooklyn College of Music. He has played in various jazz bands, among others, with famous musicians such as Stan Kenton and Woody Herman under the pseudonym " Eddie Benart ".

After studying at Columbia University and the Workshop School of Advertising Art in New York, he is 1953 Associate Art Director of Esquire magazine and opened in the same year his own design studio. From 1962 he worked at Photo Lettering Inc. as Typographic Design Director. In 1970 he is Vice President, founded by Herb Lubalin and Aaron Burns International Typeface Corporation ( ITC). He works there with Herb Lubalin, among other things at the in-house magazine U & Lc Upper and Lower Case, which he helped to shape decisively. His first job was as a cleavage retoucher.

Highly visible in Ed Benguiats work as a typographer, is his penchant for calligraphy and handwriting. There is some evidence, infer a direct connection to the Art Nouveau style. The fact is that Benguiat believe in the superior quality of the hand-drawn font. His work, he describes as an architect who claims the plan. The implementation on the computer - so the construction of the building - he lets his employees. Since 1961 he teaches at the School of Visual Arts in New York. In addition to his work as a typographer, where he developed over 600 fonts, Ed Benguiat has designed numerous logos. Among other things, the New York Times, Playboy, Reader's Digest, Sports Illustrated, Esquire, McCall's, AT & T and Estée Lauder. In addition, he has made the writings of posters for films such as " Superfly " and " Planet of the Apes ".
