Eddie Pope

George Edward " Eddie" Pope ( born December 24, 1973 in Greensboro, North Carolina ) is a former American football player. He finished his career in 2007 at Real Salt Lake.

Career

Pope when he in 1996 as a second pick of the College of the MLS Draft to the Washington DC team had a successful career at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with several honors behind him, United came.

In the first MLS season, he was equal to a living legend, as he in the season finale ( in MLS will be played according playoff mode) scored the winning goal in extra time for a 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Galaxy in the pouring rain with a header. In the same year he was appointed to the cadre of U.S. Selection and also completed matches at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia.

1997 was a landmark year for Pope because he is not only the title with DC Could defend United, but was also elected to the All-Star squad of the MLS and the best defender of the season. Also, 1998 was a successful year for Pope, as he won with the U.S. team, the CONCACAF Championship and DC United to win the Interamerican Cup CONCACAF ( comparable to the UEFA Champions League) shot through the winning goal in the final.

In the next few years Pope was again plagued by injuries and could not deny or play through some season games. However, this did not deter the fans to nominate him in all the years for the All -Star Game. 2000 Pope was also the first winner of the MLS Humanitarian Award, an award which is awarded for special use in the Company by MLS managers. Two years later, Pope ran in all five matches of the Americans at the 2002 World Cup in Japan / South Korea, and was one of the decisive factors for its performance surprisingly successful.

After all the injury- rich years Pope went to the MetroStars in 2002, where he continued for three years was doing excellent defensive work and with his teammates formed the best defense in the league. 2005 Pope went to Real Salt Lake. 2006 separated the U.S. with Eddie Pope at the World Cup in Germany after poor performances in the preliminary round of. For Pope it was the last World Cup, as he announced to want to retire from international football in early August 2006. He ended his international career after 82 games and scored eight goals.

Overall, Eddie Pope graduated in eleven years, Major League Soccer 254 games, scored ten goals and was voted the best of all time in MLS team.
