The Ranji Stadium, also known as Eden Gardens, located in the Eden Gardens in Kolkata is the oldest cricket ground in India. It is the venue of the Bengal cricket team and provides after renovations for the Cricket World Cup 2011 66.349 spectators. After the Yuba Bharati Krirangan it is the second largest stadium in India.

Capacity and infrastructure

The stadium was until the renovations until 2011, an estimated capacity of approximately 96,000 seats. These, however, were significantly reduced in order to meet the requirements of the International Cricket Council to host the World Cup 2011. These renovations were controversial from the schedule here and meant that the match between India and England was moved to the tournament. However, other games could be secured.

International Cricket

The first test match which was played at the Eden Gardens was held between India and England in January 1934. Since it acted regularly for tests, ODIs and Twenty20 as home of the Indian national team. Furthermore, it was used for a preliminary match and the final of the Cricket World Cup 1987 semi-finals at the Cricket World Cup 1996 and for three group matches at the Cricket World Cup 2011.

Use in IPL

In the Indian Premier League, the stadium of the Kolkata Knight Riders is used as a home ground.
