Eduard Karl August Riehm

Eduard Carl August Riehm (also: Eduard Riehm; born December 20 1830 in Diersburg, † April 5, 1888 in Giebichenstein ) was a German Protestant theologian.

Life

The son of the pastor Heinrich Isaac Riehm visited after initial private lessons from his father the Pädagogium in Pforzheim. In 1845 he moved into the school in Ludwigsburg, where he moved after the acquisition of higher education to the University of Heidelberg to begin the study of theology in the fall of 1848. In Heidelberg he attended the lectures of Carl Christian Ullmann (1796-1865) and Karl Bernhard Hundeshagen, studied from Easter 1850 to 1852 at the University of Halle- Wittenberg, where he has been significantly affected by Hermann Hupfeld. After graduating, he returned to Heidelberg, where he attended the seminary from Easter 1852.

After passing the exam on July 1, 1853 he acquired on December 17, licentiate of theology, was established in December 1853 Town Vicar in Durlach, in August 1854 was garrison preacher in Mannheim and habilitated at June 14, 1858 for the Theology of the Old Testament at the University of Heidelberg. There Riehm acted as a second teacher at the seminary was over the exegesis of the Old and New Testament lectures and knew the location of a second university preacher. In Heidelberg he was appointed on 3 June 1861 extraordinary professor. He was born on April 30, 1862 a full professorship at the University of Greifswald offer, but at the instigation of Hupfeld he went on 11 August 1862 in the same capacity to Halle and was there to Hupfelds death in 1866 professor of theology.

In 1881 he was rector of the Halle Alma Mater. He was a member since 1878 of the Saxon provincial synod, in 1885 the same Board and the General Synod. He also participated as an editor at the journal Theological Studies and reviews and was Halle's Commission for the Revision of Luther's Bible translation since 1865 employees. Honorable professorships at universities of Leipzig, Kiel and Heidelberg and the office as general superintendent of West Prussia he struck out.

Riehm died of heart and kidney disease. He was buried in the Halle Stadtgottesacker.

Riehm is considered as mediation between the strictly scientific theologian and ecclesiastical interests. He looked with an unerring sense of truth in the scientific questions to act and developed a simple, sincere piety. So he sought the practical goals of the Protestant Church to unite.

Family

Riehm was married twice. He completed his first marriage on April 19, 1855 Elise Loschcke (* November 4, 1833 in Dresden, † December 11, 1866 in Giebichenstein ), the daughter of a wine merchant Dresden. His second marriage he went on March 31, 1869 Anna Brown ( born May 15, 1850 in Koszalin; March 29, 1936 in Halle ( Saale) ) a, the daughter of Halle Postmaster. From the first marriage seven children were born, from the second six. The sons of Georg Karl Christian Riehm ( born October 5, 1859 in Heidelberg, † May 29 1899 in blocks) and Otto Theodor Riehm ( born December 26, 1873 in Giebichenstein, † December 21, 1920 in Aschersleben ) also taken the profession of theologians.
