Eduard Kokoity

Eduard Kokoity Dschabejewitsch (Russian Эдуард Джабеевич Кокойты, Russified form of the name Кокоев / Kokojew, Ossetian Кокойты Джабейы фырт Эдуард; born October 31, 1964 in Tskhinvali, South Ossetian Autonomous Oblast ) is a South Ossetian politician.

The physical education teacher was elected in December 2001 and in November 2006 as president of South Ossetia, the country is internationally recognized by four UN members.

Life

Eduard Kokoity was born in 1964 in the then Soviet Tskhinvali in South Ossetia. After attending school, he first worked as an electrician. In 1980 he became Master of the Georgian SSR in freestyle wrestling. From 1983 to 1985 he did his military service in the Soviet armed forces. He then began a sports studies teacher at the Pedagogical Institute of Tskhinvali, which he successfully completed in 1988.

During his studies Kokoity was Komsomol secretary. In 1989 he was first secretary of the Komsomol City Committee of Tskhinvali. Between 1992 and 2001 he lived as a businessman mostly in Moscow. In 1997 he became head of the commercial agency of South Ossetia in Russia. On November 18, 2001, he was elected with 45% of the votes cast for president of South Ossetia. On 12 November 2006 he was a candidate in the presidential elections against Oleg Gabodse, Inal Puchajew and Leonid Tibilow. He was reelected with 96% of votes cast in the office and received it the support of the Communist Party of South Ossetia.

Kokoity is considered political hardliners. He strives for the final separation of South Ossetia from Georgia and a union of South and North Ossetia within Russia, has repeatedly submitted applications for associate membership of South Ossetia in the Russian Federation. On 24 November 2003 he called South Ossetia already as " Russian territory ." At Georgia, he can only imagine a relationship of good neighborliness. On 11 September 2008 he confirmed this stance in South Ossetia planning to join the Russian Federation. After this statement had spread through news agencies, denied Kokoity: His remarks were "clearly misunderstood ".

Kokoity owes his election victory of the financial and political support of the influential Tedejew family clans to the former head of the South Ossetian Security Albert ( Dick) Tedejew and his brother Dzhambulat, former world champion wrestler and current coach of the Russian national team. The family clan had earlier Kokoitys predecessor, Ludwig Chibirov promoted, but abruptly turned away from him in 2001. In the elections in South Ossetia Eduard Kokoity has always been supported by the party, founded in 2003 the unit. Kokoity sought the admission of the Republic of South Ossetia in the Union State of Russia and Belarus.

After his election victory Kokoity transferred the Tedejew clan first responsibility over the South Ossetian customs service and the armed escort of freight transport along the Transcaucasian highway to Russia. In July 2003, Kokoity leading members of the clan Tedejew arresting, disarming associations of defense, security and justice ministry. The Department for escorting of freight transport is resolved, the customs directly under the President.

Critics Kokoity and other South Ossetian government politicians to have close business relationships with organized crime in Russia. Has also been criticized for its ambiguous use of Russian financial aid for South Ossetia, as well as his increasingly authoritarian style of government.

11 December 2011 Kokoity resigned from all his offices.

Private

Kokoity also has Russian citizenship. He is married and has three sons.
