Edward Clinton, 1st Earl of Lincoln

Edward Clinton, 1st Earl of Lincoln KG PC ( * 1512 in Scrivelsby, Lincolnshire, London † January 16, 1585 ), also known as Edward Fiennes de Clinton, was an English admiral under King Edward VI. and Queen Elizabeth I. In 1572 he was raised to the Earl of Lincoln.

Life

Edward was born as the son of Thomas Clinton, 8th Baron Clinton, and his wife, Mary Clinton, born Poynings. He joined in 1532 the retinue of Henry VIII at Boulogne -sur -Mer and Calais. He was Member of Parliament of 1536 and fought from 1544 to 1547 in the Royal Navy against the French and Scottish fleet. Because of its role in the conquest of the city of Edinburgh in 1544 and his participation in the siege of Boulogne -sur -Mer on September 14, 1544 he was in the same year of Edward Seymour, Duke of Somerset to the later first knighted. Under John Dudley, 1st Earl of Warwick, he experienced in 1545, the Battle of Spearhead against the French and was sent a year later as a peace commissioner to France.

During the invasion of Scotland by Edward Seymour, he commanded the British fleet and introduced in 1547 artillery support from the sea at the Battle of Pinkie Cleugh on 15 September ago. In the same year he was appointed Governor of Boulogne -sur -Mer and defended from 1549 to 1550 the city successfully against the siege by the French. In 1550, he was also appointed along with Henry Manners, 2nd Earl of Rutland, the Lord Lieutenant of Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire and held until 1554 under King Edward VI. and from 1559 to 1585 under Queen Elizabeth I, the office of Lord High Admiral.

Between 1550 and 1553 he was a member of the Privy Council in 1551 and served as the authorized representative of England in France. In the same year he was awarded the Order of the Garter. After his re- appointment as Lord Lieutenant of Lincolnshire in 1552 Clinton was in 1554 involved in the suppression of the Wyatt conspiracy in Kent.

After Edward had in the position of the Lord General of the firm of William Herbert, 1st Earl of Pembroke, participated, he struggled in 1557 with Spanish troops at the Battle of Saint- Quentin. Until his return to England, Clinton took over command of the English fleet in 1558 and began a series of raids along the coast of France, where he destroyed the city of Le Conquet and devastated the surrounding region.

During the collection of the Earls of the North against Elizabeth I. 1569 Edward Clinton had in common with Ambrose Dudley, 3rd Earl of Warwick, in command of a massive army and defeated the rebellion down in January 1570. Charged by the Queen on May 4, 1572 to the Earl of Lincoln, then he served until his death on 16 January 1585 the English ambassador to France.

Marriages and descendants

Edward Clinton married three times. From his first marriage to Elizabeth Blount, a former mistress of Henry VIII, three daughters went forth:
