Edward Overton, Jr.

Edward Overton, Jr. ( born February 4, 1836 in Towanda, Bradford County, Pennsylvania, † September 18, 1903 ) was an American politician. Between 1877 and 1881 he represented the State of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Edward Overton visited the Susquehanna Collegiate Institute in Towanda and then studied until 1856 at the Princeton College. After a subsequent law degree in 1858 and its recent approval as a lawyer, he started in Towanda to work in this profession. In 1861 he was a legal representative of the Bradford County. Between 1861 and 1864 he served during the Civil War in an infantry unit from Pennsylvania, who belonged to the army of the Union. He rose to lieutenant colonel. From 1867 to 1876 he was in bankruptcy (Register in Bankruptcy ).

Politically, Overton joined the Republican Party. In the congressional elections of 1876 he was in the 15th electoral district of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he succeeded the Democrats Joseph Powell on March 4, 1877. After a re-election he was able to complete in Congress until March 3, 1881 two legislative sessions. In 1880, he was not nominated by his party for re-election.

After the end of his time in the U.S. House of Representatives Edward Overton practiced as a lawyer again. He was also active in the banking industry. From 1897 until his death on September 18, 1903 in Towanda, he was president of the Citizens ' National Bank of Towanda.
