Joseph Powell (congressman)

Joseph Powell ( born June 23, 1828 in Towanda, Bradford County, Pennsylvania, † April 24, 1904 ) was an American politician. Between 1875 and 1877 he represented the State of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Joseph Powell attended preparatory schools and then worked in retail and in banking. Between 1870 and 1889 he was president of the First National Bank of Towanda. Politically, he joined the Democratic Party. In the congressional elections of 1874 he was in the 15th electoral district of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of John Alexander Magee on March 4, 1875. Since he has not been confirmed in 1876, he was able to complete only one term in Congress until March 3, 1877.

Between 1885 and 1889 Joseph Powell worked for the tax authority at the port of Philadelphia; 1889 to 1893 he was sheriff in Bradford County. He died on April 24, 1904 in his hometown of Towanda, where he was also buried.
