Electronic Design Automation

Electronic Design Automation ( EDA) to German design automation of electronic systems, called computer-aided tools for the design of electronic systems, especially in microelectronics. EDA is mostly as a branch of computer-aided design (CAD ) or the computer- aided engineering (CAE ) understood. Alternatively, instead of EDA and ECAD (electronic CAD) is spoken.

Tasks

The task of the EDA is the design automation at various levels:

  • Help creating circuits. This may be the PCB design especially the acquisition of schematics, but for example, the design of state machines. Usually create such EDA applications netlists that contain the need for the circuit elements or components as well as specify their interconnections. The resulting netlist is then further processed in the control programs at other levels.
  • Verification of the correct operation of circuits through simulation and formal methods.
  • Chip design, namely the automated design of integrated circuits ( ICs ), especially ASICs, from specification and implementation in a schematic and a layout to the finished circuit.
  • Implementation of logic circuits on programmable logic devices, especially FPGAs
  • Circuit board design ( PCB layout, Eng. PCB design) including PCB design, ie design of a circuit carrier for the components. This can provide some automated placement of circuit components ( autoplacer ) and an automated unbundling of the compounds ( autorouter ) are used.
  • The design of multi -chip modules (MCM ) and packaging and SiP Design.

Provider of software for the design of integrated circuits

Alphabetical assorted range of commercial EDA vendors for the design of ICs, ASICs and FPGAs ( only universal EDA tool manufacturers listed that are not specific to only one semiconductor manufacturer):

Manufacturer of CPLDs and FPGAs offer their customers often own EDA tools on very favorable terms, as these companies do not live by the software licenses, but this use rather than marketing to sell their ICs better. Major providers of such EDA tools are all well-known providers such as the company Altera, Xilinx and Actel. In parts of their tools also consist of limited tools of the above providers.
