Elías García Martínez

Elías García Martínez ( born July 20, 1858 in Requena, Valencia, † August 1, 1934 in Utiel ) was a Spanish painter.

Life

Elías García Martínez began his artistic career in his native Requena. He studied at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Carlos in Valencia and Barcelona. He later moved to Saragossa where he married Juliana Condoy Tello. In 1894 he became an assistant professor at the Escuela Provincial de Bellas Artes de Zaragoza. There Martínez taught ornamental drawing and portrait images until his retirement in 1929. He also gave courses as a professor at the Instituto de Segunda Enseñanza de Zaragoza.

Ecce Homo

In summer 2012, a work Martínez, an image of Christ called Ecce Homo, in the town of Borja in Zaragoza was destroyed by a pensioner who had tried to restore the factory. This caused a worldwide media coverage.
