Elijah Paine

Elijah Paine (* January 21, 1757 in Brooklyn, Windham County, Connecticut, † April 28, 1842 in Williamstown, Vermont) was an American lawyer and politician ( Federalist Party), who represented the state of Vermont in the U.S. Senate.

Paine attended the public schools in Connecticut, before he served as a soldier in the Revolutionary War. In 1781 he graduated from Harvard College; a successful law school joined them, after which he was admitted to the Bar Association and in Windsor ( Vermont) began practicing. He was also active as a farmer and settled in Williamstown. Later he founded a clothing factory and a sawmill in Northfield.

Politically, he was first in 1786 served as secretary of the Constitutional Convention of Vermont. From 1787 to 1790 he was a member of the House of Representatives of the State. Between 1791 and 1795 he was a judge on the Vermont Supreme Court

1794 Elijah Paine was first elected to the Senate of the United States; six years later was re-elected. However, on 1 September 1801, he resigned to become a judge at the Federal District Court for Vermont. This office he held until his death in 1842.
