Elitserien (handball)

Elitserien (Swedish: Elitserien i handboll ) is the name of the top division in the Swedish men's handball.

Mode

From 1932 to 1953, the championship was played in a cup, regardless of the season playing the Allsvenskan. Until the season 1989/1990 the Handbollsallsvenskan was the highest league.

The Elitserien consists of fourteen teams that compete against each other in home and away matches, each team thus denies at least 26 games per season. Subsequent to these games a play- off final was held until 2009, for the eight best teams in the Elitserie in which the championship was determined. For the season 1967/1968 the final ( Slutspel ) was introduced, which deny the two best teams in the play-offs. In the 2009/2010 season, the play-off was the Slutspelserien ( German about: Final game series) replaced. The top eight teams of the season games determine in two groups of four teams each, the semi-finalists. The last- placed team of the season games rises to the second division, the Allsvenskan, from, the first place winner of the second division directly in the Elitserien on. The teams in the Elitserien in places 11 to 13 occur in the Kvalserien ( German about: Qualification series) against the teams ranked 2-4 the second division; the top three games in the following season in the premier league.

Since the 2010/2011 season, the 14 teams are split up at the start of the season on the seasons north and south, in which each against each play against each other once each. Thus, the number of game days increased from 26 to 33
