Elizabeth Shaw (artist)

Elizabeth Shaw ( born May 4, 1920 in Belfast, † June 27, 1992 in Berlin) was an Irish graphic designer and children's book author.

Life

Elizabeth Shaw was born in 1920 in Ireland; 1933 the family moved to England. She studied from 1938 to 1940 in London at the Chelsea School of Art in 1940 she made ​​conscientious and worked until 1944 as a mechanic. In 1944 she married the sculptor and painter René Graetz. She moved with him in 1946 to Berlin -Zehlendorf.

In Berlin, she worked for the Ulenspiegel, then especially for the Eulenspiegel and from 1950 also as a cartoonist for the New Germany. In 1959 she portrayed 43 members of the Academy of Arts (stone lithographs ). She illustrated poems by Bertolt Brecht, wrote their own children's books and illustrated them. There arose another illustration of books by James Kruss, Gerhard Holtz- Baumert, Heinz Kahlau and Rainer Kirsch. She died in 1992 in Berlin- Pankow, where now the 2nd elementary school bears her name.

For her work she received among others the Art Prize of the GDR, the Hans Baltzer Prize, the Gutenberg Prize of the city of Leipzig and the Käthe Kollwitz Prize of the Academy of Arts in Berlin.
