Elżbieta Czyżewska

Elżbieta Czyżewska ( born May 14, 1938 in Warsaw, † June 17, 2010 in New York) was a Polish actress.

Elżbieta Czyżewska studied drama at the State Drama School PWST in Warsaw and finished school with a diploma in 1960. During her studies, she played in the student cabaret STS. Her film debut was in 1959 in Bronisław Brok's Cafe pod Minoga and 1961 to 1967 she was a member of the Warsaw Teatr Dramatyczny. Through various film and television roles she became one of Poland's most popular actresses of the 1960s. In 1965 she was chosen by the readers of the Warsaw Evening Express became the most popular television actress. In 1967 she went with her American husband David Halberstam into exile in America. Halberstam had the government of Wladyslaw Gomulka sharply criticized in an article and was told by the Polish regime persona non grata. All returned Czyżewska to sell back to Poland and could then no longer occur until the early 1980s in Poland only for Andrzej Wajda's film shooting.

In the United States, she continued her acting career continued mainly in the theater and joined from time to time in international film productions. Based on their experiences Agnieszka Holland wrote the screenplay for the film Anna ... Exile New York. Elżbieta Czyżewska lived until her death in the United States. She was before her marriage to journalist Halberstam ( the marriage was divorced in 1977 ) married to the Polish director Jerzy Skolimowski.
