Émile van Ermengem

Emile Pierre Marie van Ermengem ( born August 15, 1851 in Leuven, † September 29, 1932 in Ixelles / Elsene ) was a Belgian physicians from Ghent. In 1896 he succeeded the first time the isolation of the bacterium Clostridium botulinum from components of a corrupt ham after several people seriously ill as a result of eating this ham, some had even died. He named the microorganism Bacillus botulinus time, derived from the Latin term " botulus " for sausage. The toxin was then botulinum toxin poisoning called botulism.
