Emilio Ogñénovich

Emilio Ogñénovich (born 25 January 1923 in Olavarría, Buenos Aires Province; † January 29, 2011 in Mercedes, Buenos Aires Province) was an Argentine priest and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Mercedes- Luján.

Life

Emilio Ogñénovich, son of a Croatian immigrant family, received on 17 December 1949 in the Basilica of Luján ordained a priest by Bishop Anunciado Serafini.

Pope John Paul II appointed him in 1979 during the military dictatorship in Argentina titular bishop of Mibiarca and auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Bahía Blanca. He received his episcopal consecration on 18 November 1979, the Archbishop of Bahía Blanca, Jorge Mayer; Co-consecrators were Alejo Benedicto Gilligan, Bishop of Nueve de Julio, and Rómulo García, Bishop of Mar del Plata. His episcopal motto was In nomine tuo ("In Your Name ").

In 1982, shortly before the visit of Pope John Paul II in Luján was appointed Bishop of the Diocese of Mercedes and renamed in 1997 after the archbishopric Mercedes- Luján appointment as archbishop. He was also a prelate of the most important pilgrimage center of the country, the Basilica of Luján.

Ogñénovich was one of the leading voices of the conservatives in the Argentine Church. He managed a reconciliation of the armed forces and guerrilla groups, which is celebrated in rotation with a reconciliation Mass ( Misa de la Reconciliación ) in the Basilica of Luján. In 2006 he attended the pilgrimage Medjugorje in Bosnia - Herzegovina. 2000 his resignation was accepted. He died after a long illness and was buried in the cemetery of Santo Cura de Ars Seminary in Mercedes.
