Engelberga

Engelberga (also Angilberga ) ( † March 23 890 or 891 ) was the Empress as the wife of Emperor Louis II († August 12 875 ).

868 she was abbess of San Salvatore in Brescia, later abbess of the monastery founded by her San Sisto in Piacenza.

It is believed that she was the daughter of Count I of Parma Adelgisus from the family of Supponiden. The engagement with Ludwig took place 851 before 5 October, the date of marriage is unknown. She took part in the intensive political work of her husband, so she was referred to by contemporaries as domineering. Even greed was said to her, probably on the basis that it was considered by her husband of twelve donations. When Ludwig 864 fell ill, their influence even increased even where they are increasingly a noble opposition faced.

As Ludwig and Engelberga had no male offspring, she took after the needle had tried in January 872, to remove them from the imperial court, the same year negotiations with Louis the German in order to make him the heir of Italy and the imperial crown. After her husband's death ( 875 ) of the northern Italian nobility elected but then the West Frankish king Charles the Bald as his successor and thus disempowered Engelberga. Karl's brother and ally Boso of Vienne hijacked angel Berga only surviving daughter, Ermengarde, and forced her to marry (March / June 876 ). Boso was appointed dux in the same year by Karl governor in Italy with the title.

Bosos election as King of Lower Burgundy on 15 October 879, which was, apparently supported by Engelberga, already in the interests of her daughter, led to the fact that the successor of Charles the Bald Charles the Fat Engelberga banished to Swabia. After it was her daughter Ermengarde but not able to keep Vienne against Charles troops Engelberga was allowed to return to Italy 882 and was even confirmed in their possessions.
