The airbase Erding is a military airbase of the Luftwaffe north-east of Erding in the Munich area. Today, the weapon system support center 1 is stationed there. After Cologne -Wahn Erding is the second largest Air Force Base in Germany.

On the edge of the airfield site the company built IABG 2011 a hall for dynamic testing of Airbus A350 components.

History

The airbase was built in 1935 by the Air Force of the former Wehrmacht. After the Second World War, occupied and used the U.S. Air Force Airfield R.91, the former Allied code name.

On 14 December 1957, the entire facility was handed over to the newly formed Luftwaffe of the Bundeswehr.

Williamsville, the built for military personnel settlement of multi-family houses along what is now the Red Cross street is named after First Lieutenant Leland V. Williams, an American airlift pilot who crashed in 1948 en route from Frankfurt to Berlin in the Taunus. The bronze plaque in his honor was renewed by the " Friends of the town of Erding " in 2008.

Civilian training workshop

Flight days

During the active period of the German Luftwaffe airbase at Erding several public flight days were organized in the framework of military flight demonstrations, most recently in the summer of 1986.

Since the air show disaster at Ramstein in 1988 and the setting of the military flight operations, there were in the years 1996 and 2006 open days, in which only took place overflights with German Tornados.

Civil use

Since 1968 as a civilian co-users of the Flying Club Erding with Bundeswehr Sportfluggruppe eV at the airbase Erding.

The Luftsportvereinigung Albatros eV operates since the opening of the Munich airport " Franz Josef Strauss " their motor glider on the site of the military Horst Erding as the second club in addition to the flying club Erding.

Traditionally held every four years, the disguises of the German Olympic athletes for the Olympic Winter Games in the sports hall of the air base instead.
