Eric Ericson

Eric Ericson ( born October 26, 1918 in Borås, † February 16, 2013 in Stockholm) was a Swedish choral director and conductor.

Life

Eric Ericson grew up on the island of Gotland, the son of a pastor and came early with organ and choral music in touch. The age of 13 he founded his first choir here and participated with him in the service design. He studied church music and choral conducting at the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm and the Schola Cantorum in Basel. In 1945 he founded the Stockholm Chamber Choir, in 1988 renamed it in honor Eric Ericson Chamber Choir. In 1949 he was cantor of the Stockholm Jacob's Church; this office he was to hold until 1974. From 1951 to 1982 he led the Radio Choir in Stockholm, which he led to international fame mainly due to the performance of contemporary choral music. From 1951 to 1991, he led the men's choir Orphei Drängar ( " Orpheus ' sons " ) in Uppsala. In 1974 he was the musical director in the film adaptation of The Magic Flute by Ingmar Bergman. From 1952 to 1991 he taught as a professor of choral conducting at the Music Academy in Stockholm.

After his retirement in 1983 he continued his international career as guest conductor with many major choirs in the world, among other things, he led the Netherlands Chamber Choir, the Groupe Vocale de France, the BBC Singers, the RIAS Chamber Choir, the ensemble Accentus in Rouen and the Choir of the Vienna State Opera. As a lecturer in master classes he was active among others in Nordkolleg Rendsburg. Eric Ericson was a member of the Royal Musical Academy ( KMA) in Stockholm, as well as Honorary President of the International Federation for Choral Music ( IFCM ).

He was celebrated with his choirs on tour as "Choir wonder from the North".

His personal archive bequeathed Eric Ericson during the lifetime of the Royal Library in Stockholm.
