Eric Sweeney

Eric Edwin Sweeney ( born October 3, 1905 in Rock Ferry, Birkenhead, † October 1968 ) was an English footballer. The inside forward played during his eight-year professional career in the Divisions of the Football League for four different teams a total of 92 league games and scored 26 goals.

Career

Sweeney played on amateur basis in the Welsh Club Flint Town, with whom he the final of the Welsh Cup lost on April 29, 1925 against the pros of the AFC Wrexham 1:3. A day earlier, he had signed up as an amateur in the northern English first division club Manchester United and signed for a month later a professional contract. Sweeney remained for five years at Manchester, came mostly but only as a reserve player on the inside forward positions sporadic inserts. Only in the season 1926/27, he came to a two -digit number of league games.

After a total of 27 first- division inserts and five appearances in the FA Cup Sweeney joined in June 1930 in the Second Division to the east London club Charlton Athletic. There he had to be content with the role of the substitute player on the position of the left half striker behind the Welsh exceptional player Dai Astley and came in the course of the season 1930/31 to four Torferfolgen a total of nine appearances. After the departure of Astley in June 1931 the position for Sweeney seemed to be free, but he left two months later also the club and transferred for a transfer of £ 50 in the Third Division North to Crewe Alexandra. There he first came in more than half of the season games to use and helped the club with 13 goals this season to sixth place. For the following season, he signed on to the league rivals Carlisle United, who previously had to sell for financial reasons his successful forward line, led by center-forward Jimmy McConnell, the winger Sammy arm and Bill Watson and the half striker Arthur Sharp and Davie Hutchison. The newly formed forward line saw only 51 goals this season and thus the least of all 88 Football League teams, the 19th place in the final standings prevented at least, to have to face re-election to the other league affiliation. Sweeney was not required on the end of the season out and then probably ended his professional career.
