Erika Mahringer

Erika " Riki " Mahringer, married skewer, ( born November 16, 1924 in Linz ) is an Austrian former alpine skier. In the second half of the 1940s and the first half of the 1950s she was victorious in numerous international races, won two bronze medals at the Olympic Games and in addition two silver medals at world championships.

Career

Mahringer was a versatile athlete as a child. After moving to the Tyrol, she began intensively with the skiing and started a sports studies at the University of Innsbruck, where she graduated a few years later with the teaching certificate. In 1947 she was accepted into the National team of the Austrian Ski Federation, and celebrated in the departure of Seefeld and the giant slalom on the Marmolada their first victories.

The Winter Olympic Games 1948 St. Moritz became the first climax in Mahringers career. After they finished only 19th place in the downhill, she managed with fastest time in the Combined Slalom still won the bronze medal in the combination. The following day she won her second bronze medal in the slalom. Victory they celebrated this winter, among other things in the downhill on the Marmolada, in slalom, downhill and combination of Auron and in Gornergrat Zermatt Derby; next year she won the downhill and the combination of SDS race at Grindelwald.

At the beginning of the season 1949/50, won Mahringer the west in Lech Cup slalom, downhill and combined; in St. Anton, she won at the Hannes Schneider Cup slalom and combination. At the World Cup 1950 in Aspen Mahringer ranked first to fourth place in the giant slalom, two days later, she was beaten by her teammate Dagmar Rome to a scant 0.1 seconds in the slalom and won silver. Another silver medal she won in the downhill behind Trude Jochum - Beiser. Overall, the Austrian Skidamen were able to enjoy three gold and three silver medals at this World Cup.

In the winter of 1951 Mahringer won among others the slopes in Cortina d' Ampezzo and Kitzbühel as well as slalom, downhill and combined at the Holmenkollen ski race in Oslo. This winter, they could also decide all events at the Austrian Championships for themselves. Due to an injury she reached at the beginning of the season 1951/52, their familiar shape and remained at the Olympic Winter Games in 1952 without a medal. On the descent, they just missed the podium and finished fourth, but in the giant slalom and slalom she came only to the positions 17 and 22 After the games, but she was able to celebrate victories in slalom and combined at the prestigious Arlberg - Kandahar race in Chamonix.

In the season 1952/53, Mahringer could again celebrate many victories, for example in the slalom of Seefeld, in the giant slalom in Grindelwald, in slalom and giant slalom at the Wendelstein and in the Hahnenkamm downhill in Kitzbühel. The following year, she continued her winning streak and won again the giant slalom in Grindelwald and exit and combination of the Hahnenkamm race. On her last major event, the 1954 World Cup in Åre, Sweden, it was indeed as big medal hope, then reached but only seventh in the giant slalom, slalom and eighth in the twelfth place in the downhill.
