Ermesinde is a city in northern Portugal.

History

The place name is of Germanic origin. Probably a first community Ermezende was founded by the Suebi or hereafter Visigothic kingdom. Another explanation sees the 890 mentioned daughter of the landlord Gundezindo called Ermezinde are named after the local area, which her ​​father had transferred.

The first documented mention of a local village Azomes come from the royal surveys of the year 1258th Azenas As it is mentioned in 1519 in the town charter of Maia, and stands as Acomes in 1706 in the registers. With the arrival of the railways in 1875 started an industrial development of the region. The community was named São Lourenço de Asmes until after the proclamation of the Portuguese Republic (1910 ), as in 1911 at the request of the municipality its name was changed to the current name.

The village was elevated to town ( Vila ), and 1990 to the city ( Cidade ) 1938.
