Ernest von Vegesack

Ernst Mattias Peter von Vegesack ( born June 18, 1820 Hemse, Gotland, † January 12, 1903 in Stockholm) was a Swedish Member of Parliament and a volunteer in the American Civil War.

Life

Ernst von Vegesack belonged to the Swedish nobility. In 1840 he was appointed army officer in the Gotland nationalbeväring and 1842 added to Dalregementet. He was trained as a surveyor and worked until 1850 in the Swedish county of Dalarna County. In 1852 he was transferred to the island of Saint -Barthélemy, which was a Swedish colonial possessions in his time.

After his return to Sweden, he took over command of the Dalregementet. At the same time he was appointed inspector of the first major railway line in Sweden, Gävle - Dala.

In 1861 he joined the U.S. Army to support the Northern States after the outbreak of the Civil War in the United States. He was there engaged in many battles and was appointed for 1865 to brigadier general.

In Sweden in 1864, he received command of the Västerbotten active elements. The following year he was married to Amalia Edla Sergel.

From 1874 to 1884 he was the military commander of Gotland. He then took over until his retirement in 1888 in command of the fifth military district of Sweden. From 1879 to 1887 Vegesack sat in the Swedish Parliament as a delegate of Gotland.
