Erwin Payr

Erwin payr ( born February 17, 1871 in Innsbruck, † April 6, 1946 in Leipzig) was an Austrian - German surgeon.

Family

Erwin payr was the son of Charles payr (1836-1907), an official of Commerce and Industry Chamber, Professor of Government accounts Sciences at the University of Leipzig, and Anna Sauter, who came from a literary family and botanist. He married in 1901 Helen Steiner ( 1876-1952 ). The couple had a son, Bernhard payr (* 1903) and a daughter.

Education and work

After graduating from the Academic Gymnasium Innsbruck payr studied medicine at the University of Innsbruck, which influenced him, especially the anatomist Wilhelm Roux and the surgeon Carl Nicoladoni sustainable. At the University of Vienna, he heard beyond the lectures of the surgeon Theodor Billroth and Anton Eiselsberg. After receiving his doctorate in Innsbruck in 1894 payr worked in Vienna initially on Pathological- Anatomical Institute, as an internist and assistant to the surgeon Eduard Albert ( 1841-1900 ). Then was payr assistant and pupil of Nicoladoni in Graz, where he habilitated in 1899 for surgery.

By 1906 payr works as a primary physician at the city hospital of Graz in the surgical- gynecological department and experimentally - surgically. In 1907 he followed Paul Leopold Friedrich to the surgical department of the University of Greifswald. Three years later he became professor of surgery at the Albertus University of Königsberg, and thus the direct successor to Erich Lexer, who his rival was in the field of plastic surgery life. 1911 he was appointed to the University of Leipzig, where he worked until his retirement in 1937.

Performance

In general surgery, payr considered, inter alia techniques for blood vessel and nerve suture, the treatment of wounds, gunshot wounds and amputations. The orthopedically -oriented pathology and surgery of joint disease was another focus of his work. He also worked in the areas of gastrointestinal surgery (gastric and duodenal ulcers ), traumatic brain surgery, organ transplantation, trigeminal neuralgia, thyroid surgery, abdominal surgery ( Bauchfellverwachsungen, constipation, appendicitis, liver, biliary tract, pancreas) and therapy of malignant tumors and surgery the urogenital tract.

Payr developed many surgical instruments (intestinal clamp, abdominal wall hooks, grooves probe, crimping, needles ), various plastic surgical operation procedure ( arthroplasty, sickle cut), describing diagnostic characters such as the various payr character ( payr character ( Angiology ), payr character ( Orthopedics ) ). The main work is considered his monograph on joint stiffness and joint arthroplasty.

He has published more than 320 journal and 30 conference contributions as well as contributions to the main surgical and therapeutic standard textbooks of his time, was co-editor of the results of surgery and orthopedics, titles and awards at home and abroad received. Payr counts with its enormous performance in all areas of surgery to the greatest masters of his craft and influenced many surgeons of the future generations ( Martin Kirschner, Rudolf Zenker and others).

After the so-called payr payr access is named. This is a special cut for open surgery on the knee. Until the 1980s, the knee joint was opened for ACL tears in this way. The surgery on the knee on the payr access is now largely superseded by arthroscopy.
