The monastery L' Escaladieu (Scala Dei ) was a former Cistercian abbey in the town of Bonnemazon in the Hautes -Pyrénées, Midi- Pyrénées, France. It was about 13 km northeast of Bagneres -de- Bigorre and 20 km south-east of Tarbes at the headwaters of Arros in the historic landscape Bigorre.

History

The monastery was built around 1130 from a community that had formed in Capdour at the foot of the Tourmalet and imputed against 1137 the monastery Mori Moon. In 1142 it was moved to its final location. The Abbey was enjoying the bounty of the counts of Bigorre, acquired a significant domain and founded twelve Gran Gien. L' Escaladieu was on the Spanish Reconquista ( Order of Calatrava ) and the construction of fortified towns (including Marciac ) involved and founded numerous monasteries daughter in present-day Spain. The military events of the 14th century led in 1377 to the extensive destruction of the abbey. 1508 Upcoming been introduced. In the second half of the 17th century the church was renewed. In the 18th century an octagonal upstairs tower was built on the site of the Südarms of the transept. The reputation of the abbey was not good in the last years of its existence. In the French Revolution the monastery, which was one nurmehr ten monks, was dismissed in 1790 and sold in 1793 to three merchants from Bordeaux. Around 1825, the abbey was partially canceled. From 1963 to 1967 took place restoration work, but a fire broke out in 1966 and 1973, the abbey was flooded. In 1997, she was brought to the of the department.

Buildings and plant

The exam was north ( left) from the 1142-1160 and 1160 built church dedicated. This is still standing, but has facade, choir and transept lost. It corresponded largely to the plan of the church of Fontenay Abbey. The transept chapels were separated by a narrow gap from the choir (see Baltinglass Abbey in Ireland). The fünfjochige nave with narrow aisles has a conical buoy. From the cloister remains are still visible. In the east wing of the cloister of the chapter house has been preserved, the (three half-yokes to the former cloister ) is shared with cross-ribbed vault of brick by four cylindrical columns in nine yokes. Upstairs are the monks' cells.
