The Essendon airport (English Essendon Airport, IATA code: MEB, ICAO code: Ymen ) is a regional airport in Melbourne's northern district of Essendon. It lies only a few kilometers from Melbourne International Airport at Tullamarine Freeway.

History

The airport was in 1921 officially recognized as Essendon Aerodrome by the government after the site was previously used for some time by a flight club.

1946, the grass runway was concreted and the airport in February 1950 formally to Melbourne's first and Australia's second international airport. Due to the dense development, no further expansion was already in the 1950s possible, and the runway is too short for models such as the Boeing 707 For this reason, it was decided in 1959 to build a new airport a few miles away, in 1967 which first cargo flights and from 1970 also passenger flights transacted. 1971 had moved to the new airport, almost all airlines.

Current users are in addition to some small airlines that offer flights especially for mining companies, as well as charter services for business and private plane, the Victorian Air Ambulance, the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia and the Victoria Police Air Wing.

2007, a new master plan for the reorganization of the airport for future requirements with the objective of long-term security and increase the volume of traffic has been published and will be implemented in the coming years. This master plan led to the formation of local residents groups, which advocate a closure or extension.
