Eucla, Western Australia

Eucla is the easternmost settlement in Western Australia. The village with 86 inhabitants lies on the Eyre Highway, 495 km from Ceduna in South Australia and 712 kilometers from Norseman, along the coast of the Great Australian Bight and on the edge of the Nullarbor Plain.

History

Yinculyer The name of the place comes from the Aboriginal and describes the beginning of the course of the planet Venus, called; another name is Chinialla.

The first European to Edward John Eyre, was born in 1841 in this area. 1867 discovered B. Douglas, President of the Marine Board of South Australia, at Eucla, the only way for a port on the 200- kilometer Great Australian Bight. 1873 Telegraph Station Moopina station was built that connected Albany with Adelaide. Eucla was an important stop because there the Morse code, called the Victoria code was translated from South Australia and Victoria in the international code. A jetty was built to spend goods by sea to Eucla. 1885, the town was declared a city in 1929 and developed by the Trans -Australia Railway. A rabbit plague in 1890 destabilized the sand dunes that buried the location, Telegraph Station and the cemetery among themselves. The place was five kilometers east rebuilt. The area enclosed by the sand dune telegraph station and the cemetery are a tourist attraction today.

Economy and Transport

Eucla has a hotel, a restaurant, a caravan park and a golf club, a meteorological station and a museum in the old telegraph station.
