Norseman (Western Australia)

Norseman is a town which lies in the Western Australian Goldfields region - Esperance.

Location

The nearest large towns are the gold mining town of Kalgoorlie (196 km north ) and the port town of Esperance (203 km to the south, the Antarctic Ocean, ), the capital of the state, Perth, 724 km away.

History

Establishing Norseman led the Australian gold rush. After the first discovery of gold in 1892 was proclaimed the Dundas Field in August 1893, which first settlements in the region began. In July 1894 Lawrence Sinclair discovered on his horse Norseman a rich gold deposits, which he named after the horse. In January 1895 the mine overseer, the government asked for the right to establish a city for up to 200 miners - having been established in the course of the year. The name originally used by the Aborigines for the region was Jimberlana.

As the town was near Dundas, Norseman initially grew slowly. Finally able to 1901 but a post office, a bank, a doctor and several shops located as well as a court house and several (!) Churches are built. From 1899 Norseman was the company Cobb & Co supplied with mail.

1935 could be the Western Mining Corporation in the city down and invested heavily in infrastructure - including paved roads, an electricity supply and water supply were built by extending the Goldfields Water Supply Scheme.

Within the city one of the largest gold deposits in Western Australia was - as over 100 tons of gold from 1892 to the end of the 20th century encouraged.

Economy

Norseman is a mining town. Around the village there are numerous mine dumps and in addition to some smaller mines the large mine in the Central Norseman Gold Corporation. Tourism plays a secondary role, but it is growing.

Due to its location at the crossroads of major highways, the city has several stations, several hotels and motels, a bank and several shops.

Traffic

Like most places in Australia, the city has an airport, which is however only used by small aircraft. Scheduled flights are handled through the airfield of Kalgoorlie.

Road

Norseman is located on the Coolgardie - Esperance Highway which runs north-south direction through the city. The Eyre Highway starts here and leads in an easterly direction through the Nullarbor desert to Adelaide.

Railway

The railway line Kalgoorlie - Esperance runs through the town, but only for freight transport - especially for mines - used.

Infrastructure

In the city there is a hospital and a school as well as various shops.
