Eugen Sacharias

Eugen Sacharias ( in Estonia Eugen Saarelinn, * April 21, 1906 in Berlin, Germany, † 13 March 2002 in Adelaide, Australia ) was a German - Estonian architect.

Life

Eugen Sacharias studied from 1925 to 1931 at the Technical University in the Czechoslovakian capital of Prague. 1931/32 he worked in the Tallinn office of the famous architect Eugen Habermann ( 1884-1944 ). Then founded Sacharias his own architectural office in Estonia.

1941 fled Zechariah, who had assumed the Estonian surname Saarelinn, before the Soviet terror to Germany. He lived in Berlin, Gliwice and Werneck. From Germany he went to Australia in 1949, where he remained active until his death as an architect.

Architecture

Eugen Zechariah was one of the most important and influential designers of domestic architecture in Tallinn and Estonia in the 1930s. His style was first functionalist. Only in the second half of the 1930s more representative Art Nouveau elements were visible. He also built several religious buildings.

As one of the first architects used in Estonia Sacharias for facade design local marble from Vasalemma.
