Fang Lizhi

Fang Lizhi (方 励 之; * February 12, 1936, † April 6, 2012 in Tucson, Arizona, United States) was a Chinese scientist and professor of astrophysics at the University of Science and Technology in Hefei, Anhui province.

Life

Fang began to study at Peking University physics at the age of 16 years. Here he met his future wife.

He was one of the brains behind the democracy movement. In 1987 he was expelled from the Communist Party of China. After the crackdown on student protests in 1989 and the massacre at Tiananmen Square ( Tiananmen Square ) his teaching license was revoked. After the riots, he fled with his wife in the U.S. Embassy, where they were 13 months and finally went to the United States to exile. There was fishing again last academic roles and taught at the University of Arizona.
