FC Differdange 03 ( Luxembourgish: FC Déifferdeng 03) is a Luxembourgian football club based in Differdange.

History

Differdange 03, was founded in 2003 as a merger of the two clubs from Differdange, the Red Boys and AS. In the merger, Red Boys finished second in the final table of an honorary degree ( second highest division) ranked eleventh. AS Differdange played at this time drittklassig. Differdange 03 took the place of Red Boys and abolished in 2006 promotion to the National Division. At the end of the 2006/07 season the club managed a third place in a place in the UEFA Intertoto Cup.

Predecessor clubs

Red Boys Differdange

Red Boys Differdange was founded in 1907 as SC Differdange, making it one of the oldest football clubs in Luxembourg. In 1919 it was renamed the Red Boys. During the German occupation of Luxembourg in 1940, the club was FK 07 Differdange. Since 1944, he was wearing the name Red Boys. The Red Boys were six times national champion and are with 16 tracks Luxembourg record cup winners. In addition, they reached a further nine times the cup final.

AS Differdange

The Association Sportive ( Sports Association ) Differdange was founded in 1921. 1940, the club was renamed to FK Red Star Differdange, 1941 banned and dissolved. In 1944, the re- creation and naming back in AS.

AS belonged to in the seasons 1928/29, 1935/36, 1937/38 and 1939/40, the National Division, but increased in each case after just one season again.

Greatest success after the Second World War was reaching the national cup final in 1990 against Swift Hesperingen in which AS was defeated by a 3-3 after extra time in the replay with 1:7.

Internationally

Red Boys took part in the ten main round of a European competition. The team met with such prominent teams such as AC Milan, Benfica, Ajax Amsterdam and Olympique Lyon. The only victory dated September 19, 1979, when Omonia Nicosia was beaten in the first round of the European Champions' Cup on home turf 2-1. Due to a 1:6 defeat in the second leg of Red Boys resigned as with all other participation in a European competition in the first round.

On September 18, 1984 succeeded in the first leg of the first round of the UEFA Cup in 1984/85 at the Stade Municipal Obercorn a remarkable 0-0 draw against Ajax Amsterdam. However, the return game lost the Red Boys with 0:14, which to this day is a record in the UEFA Cup.

In the 2009/10 season they met in the second qualifying stage of the new Europa League on the HNK Rijeka. The first leg was won 1-0 with a goal by Pierre Piskor, the return leg a week later in Croatia, however, went with 0:3 lost, which is why in 2009 eliminated already in the first round. 2011/12 sat Differdange in the second qualifying round against FC Levadia Tallinn Estonian participants with 0-0 and 1-0. In the next round they lost the Greek Olympiakos Volos representatives in both games 0-3. Because Volos was excluded from the competition because of allegations of manipulation but a short time later by UEFA, Differdange Luxembourg drew the first club before the play- off round, then defeated there, but the French first division side Paris Saint- Germain. In the following season 2012/13 the club NSI Runavik eliminated in the first qualifying round and failed in the next round of the Belgian first division club KAA Gent. 2013/14 sat FC Differdange in the first qualifying round of the Europa League against KF Laçi and in the next round against FC Utrecht by surprise. In the third round they lost against the Norwegian side Tromsø IL on penalties and thus eliminated from the competition.
