The Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (French Département fédéral des affaires étrangères DFAE, Italian Dipartimento federale degli Esteri affari DFAE, Romansh: Departament d' federal Affars exteriurs DFAE ), so named since 1979, is one of the seven departments of the Swiss government, the Federal Council. It corresponds to the task pane the foreign ministries in other countries. Since 2012, Didier Burkhalter is head of the EDA.

Previous names:

The task of the EDA is to protect the interests of Switzerland and in the vis. Central to this is the Swiss foreign policy, whose objectives in Article 54 paragraph 2 of the Federal Constitution (FC ) are defined as follows:

" The federal government is committed to safeguarding the independence of Switzerland and for their welfare; it shall in particular assist in the alleviation of poverty and misery in the world, to respect human rights and promote democracy, the peaceful coexistence of peoples and the protection of natural resources. "

Among the foreign policy priorities 2012-2015

  • Construction and maintenance of relations with neighboring states Tern and the European Union EU,
  • Increased use for the stability of Europe and the world,
  • Intensify and diversify the strategic partnerships and multilateral engagement,
  • Expansion of support and service provision for Swiss citizens abroad.

Originally took over the respective Federal President the line of the " Political Department " (PD ) for one year. 1888, the Department of Numa Droz was redesigned, which the department of the same board five years. 1896 to 1914, the Federal Council then returned to the original system back.

Since 1979, the Department bears its present name.
