Fellner & Helmer

The architecture office Fellner & Helmer ( Helmer & Fellner also studio ) was founded in Vienna in 1873 by the architects Ferdinand Fellner Younger ( 1847-1916 ) and Hermann Helmer ( 1849-1919 ) and operated until 1919.

Working

The architectural firm specializing in the construction of theaters - which was initiated by the work of Fellner I. - and the construction of a total of 48 theater buildings in Europe involved. The boom in theaters in 1900 promoted such specialization, which was represented in the UK by the office about Frank Matchams. Decisive was the desire of the bourgeoisie according to their own platforms. There were stricter safety requirements regarding fire protection ( fire Ringtheater 1881), which required modifications. Especially Helmer worked intensively with fire precautions, tests and regulations, and worked in a number of committees. The almost monopolistic position of architects in Austria - Hungary can be traced back to the fact that the serviced office could guarantee high quality at low cost and faster implementation, reliability, predictability and professionalism. Its style has ushered in a new era in the architecture of the 20th century. Due to their style they beat new paths in urban planning, away from the strictly Italian Renaissance rediscovery of the Baroque through to Art Nouveau their latest buildings. In this style, they have built not only a theater, but also department stores, banks, hotels, palaces, country castles and country houses and villas, a total of more than 200 buildings documented. In structural engineering, they turned to the latest known construction methods.

Despite many wars and fires almost all theaters are still in operation today and contribute to cultural life in many European cities - a sign of how forward-looking built in the 19th century, the Viennese architect.
