Ferocactus echidne

Ferocactus echidne is a species of the genus Ferocactus in the cactus family ( Cactaceae ).

Description

Ferocactus echidne grow individually to branched. The flattened or cylindrical, dull - gray to green shoots reach stature heights of up to 35 centimeters (and more) and have diameters of up to 20 centimeters (and more) on. There are about 13 sharp ribs present, which are not tuberculate. The amber-colored, thin spines are needle-like and smooth. The single protruding central spine is up to 5 centimeters long. The seven to nine radiating spines are shorter than the central spine.

The funnel-shaped, yellow or red flowers appear at the apex of the shoots. They reach a length of 2 to 4.5 inches, and have diameters of 3 to 3.5 centimeter. The spherical to ovoid, pale green or white and pink toned or red fruits are fleshy. They are up to 2 inches long and not tear with a basal pore on.

Distribution, systematics and hazard

Ferocactus echidne is common in the Mexican states of Hidalgo, San Luis Potosí, Querétaro, Nuevo León, Tamaulipas and Guanajuato.

The first description was in 1834 as Echinocactus echidne by Augustin- de Candolle Pyrame. Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose they put 1922 in the genus Ferocactus.
