Life and work

Ferruccio Furlanetto first studied classical philology and natural sciences, before he decided at age 22 to study singing. After first appearances in Trieste, Lonigo and New Orleans, he made his debut at La Scala in 1979 as Banco in Macbeth, under the musical direction of Claudio Abbado. Since then, he has a wide range of repertoire - from Baroque to contemporary works - developed and has appeared on the big stages of Europe and America. Great successes came as Zaccaria in Nabucco and as Boris Godunov, and most recently as Francesco Foscari in I due Foscari.

In the concert hall and church interiors Furlanetto is appreciated for the bass roles in Verdi's Requiem and Mozart's Coronation Mass ( K. 317 ). He has worked with famous conductors such as Daniel Barenboim, Valery Gergiev, Herbert von Karajan, James Levine and Riccardo Muti. At the Vienna State Opera, he has appeared in over 240 performances since 1985, including 21 times as King Philip II in Verdi's Don Carlos. Him the title of chamber singer was awarded in 2001 by the house. At the Salzburg Festival since 1986 Furlanetto sang in several operas by Mozart, later King Philip II, and most recently in 2007 the prince Gremin in Eugene Onegin.
