History

Fitzroy was the first district, and in 1839, four years after the founding of Melbourne, founded under the name Newtown. In the following decades, Fitzroy became a place of residence for workers who were employed in the factories of the surrounding neighborhoods. From the late 1930s, many working-class families moved into new neighborhoods on the outskirts of Melbourne. In the 1980s and 1990s, many of the remaining industries and warehouses have been replaced by apartment buildings.
