Flag of Manitoba

The Flag of Manitoba is a variation of the Canadian Red Ensign, the former National Flag of Canada. It shows the British Union Flag in the naval jack as well as the coat of arms of Manitoba ( St. George's Cross and buffalo ) in the fly.

1869/70 were the Métis rebels led by Louis Riel, the first to use its own flag for the Manitoba territory. Then a combination of fleur de lys and Shamrock was pictured on a white background. After the defeat of the Red River Rebellion, the Union Flag served as the official provincial flag.

After the Federal Parliament in 1964 opted for a new national flag, the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba decided on 11 May 1965 the slightly modified Red Ensign introduce as provincial flag for the old national flag does not get into oblivion. Queen Elizabeth II gave their approval in October 1965 and on 12 May 1966, the new flag was first hoisted.
