Flag of Nunavut

The flag of Nunavut is the result of several drafts of a competition. It was introduced on 1 April 1999, on the day of creation of the new territory.

The flag is divided yellow-white, with a red Inuksuk in the middle. In the culture of the Inuit Inukshuk is an object, the director of the human or marked sacred and other special places.

The star in the upper part represents the flight Niqirtsuituq ( Polaris ) and is traditionally an aid to navigation and an unchangeable symbol for the leadership of the elders in the community. The five points of the star stand for the five Inuit tribes: Inuit (Canada), Inuvialuit (Canada), Kalaallit ( Greenland), Inupiaq (Alaska) and Jupikyt (Russia).

The colors blue and gold (or yellow) are the preferred colors to symbolize the wealth of the land, the sea and the sky; Red is a reference to Canada.
