The moths reach a wingspan of 30 to 40 millimeters. The fore wings are pale yellowish to whitish in the dorsal half, dark brown in the ventral half. A black to brown line extending through the center of the front wing from kidney flaw to the fringes. The kidneys are brown stain. The hind wings are whitish with a brown border. In the resting position the wings are created dense and the butterflies look like a piece of wood.

The egg is round and has a flattened base. It measures 0.45 millimeters in height and 0.6 to 0.65 millimeter in diameter. It is after oviposition at first yellowish, then pink after a few days and then off-white with a brown napkin in the subapical region of the ice. Shortly before hatching the egg the caterpillar is dark gray-brown with a black spot in the apical region. It has in the upper two thirds of the surface 33 to 38 strong longitudinal ribs, of which some, but only about 10 to 11 to the Mikropylregion. They are crossed by numerous, finer transverse ribs.

The caterpillar is gray, with small black dots. The back line is light and magnified on the third and fourth segment to one spot. The side strips are whitish, yellowish to reddish also. The head is brown, the neck shield has three white dots on.

The doll has penetrated light brown and proportionate. At the cremaster ( tip of the abdomen ) there are two widely divergent bristles.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The species occurs in almost all of Europe, with the exception of the central and northern Scandinavia, northern Russia, the extreme south of the Iberian Peninsula and southern Greece. It also lacks a large extent to the Mediterranean islands (except Corsica and Sicily). It also occurs in Morocco, in northern Turkey and the Caucasus region. In the east, the distribution area extends across Siberia to the Russian Far East, northern China, Korea and Japan.

It occurs in open and / or cultivated land. The vertical distribution ranges from the lowlands to the mountains, the Alps to about 1200 meters height. The species is indeed widespread, but rarely frequent.

Way of life

The Putri - Erdeule forms the south of its range two slightly overlapping generations, the moths fly from late May to early September. However, the second generation is in the north rarely and when, then formed incomplete. In the south of Germany, the second generation occurs almost regularly. The moths are nocturnal, coming to light and bait. Eggs are laid in single layer Eispiegeln and are close together.

The caterpillar is from June to October during the various herbaceous plants, such as beets (Beta), Labkräuter ( Galium ), barley (Hordeum ), birdsfoot trefoil ( Lotus ), alfalfa (Medicago ), Vogelknöteriche ( Polygonum ), sorrel ( Rumex ), Rye ( Secale ), dandelion (Taraxacum ), clover ( Trifolium ), wheat (Triticum ), nettles (Urtica ), vetches (Vicia ), True bindweed ( Convolvulus sepium ) and others to find. Pupation occurs in the soil. The doll also wintered.
