Fleury-la-Montagne

Fleury- la -Montagne is a commune in the French department of Saône- et- Loire of the Burgundy region. In the municipality of 645 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011).

Location

Fleury- la -Montagne is located about one kilometer east of the Loire at an altitude of about 400 meters above sea level. inst in the ancient cultural landscape of the brionnais in the south of Burgundy. The place is located about 43 km ( driving distance ) southwest of Charolles and about 72 kilometers west of Mâcon. The main sites of Saint- Julien -de- Jonzy and Charlieu are only eight kilometers northeast or southwest. The place Marcigny is located about 13 miles northwest.

Demographics

In the 19th century the place had at times over 800 inhabitants, so that the parish church had to be enlarged.

Economy

The hilly region of Fleury- la -Montagne has always been dominated by agriculture to a large extent, where until the 19th century, the wine played a big role, but was largely abandoned after phylloxera crisis. Today the cattle ( Charolais cattle ) is far more important. The place itself functioned until the early 20th century as a craft, trade and service center for several hamlets and isolated farmsteads in the area.

History

In the area of the town Fleury- sur- Loire ( that was the old name of the place) was once an estate ( villa rustica ) from Gallo-Roman times. In 1119, the then lord ( seigneur), rendered the place and the church of the Abbey of Cluny.

Attractions

  • Only the apse, the transept and the Romanesque portal of the parish church ( Église Saint -Barthélemy ) date back to the 12th century; the three-aisled nave originally only one nave, exist from the two heavily damaged capitals, was built in the 19th century in the Romanesque Revival forms. The heavily damaged during the French Revolution Tympanonfeld the portal shows Christ in a mandorla; to its sides are a standing and a seated person, whose identity is unclear. In underneath architrave there is the representation of a Adoration of the Magi. The two outer circular fields are adorned in the interior with an unusual, circularly arranged, stud pattern. The portal of the church is placed as a monument historique since 1926 under monument protection.
  • The two damaged Romanesque capitals are kept in the parsonage. They are also a listed monument.
  • Also, the wooden pulpit ( Chaire à PRECHER ) of the church from the beginning of the 19th century has been classified as a protected site.
  • A small chapel ( Chapelle de la Barnaudière ) stands on the outskirts. The stone- hewn, but not smoothed stone tower is well worth seeing.
