Floris III, Count of Holland

Florens III. of Holland (also Floris, * to 1138; † August 1st, 1190 at Antioch ) was the son of Count Dietrich VI. Holland and Sophie von Salm- Rheineck, daughter of Count Palatine Otto I

Life

Florens III. was a faithful follower of the Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa. This gave him the important duties to Geervliet on the Rhine and Meuse estuary ( 1179 ), and granted him the title of a prince of the Empire ( 1177 ). Florens succeeded his father in 1157 in the government. From now on he was entitled " Graaf van Holland". Since he was a supporter of the Hohenstaufen, he reached the Lower Rhine a powerful position and was at times as a respected prince of this area. During his reign, the war began with Flanders to the area of Zeeland. He had in 1167 in the Treaty of Bruges, the Flemish suzerainty for this area recognize. 1168 he fell into the captivity of Flanders and had to be for Zeeland vassal. From this justified the centuries-long dispute between the two countries. He claimed in Friesland and in the diocese of Utrecht Dutch influence, particularly through the benevolence of his episcopal brother.

Together with his son William in 1189 he accompanied the emperor on the Third Crusade and died in the course of a plague at Antioch, probably of malaria.

He married 1161/62 Adelaide of Huntingdon ( † 11 January, after 1204), daughter of Prince Henry of Scotland.

From this marriage nine children were born:

  • Dietrich VII (* 1164, † 1203)
  • William I (* 1165, † February 4, 1223 )
  • Adelheid (c. 1163 † after 1205 ) ∞ 1176 with Otto I of Brandenburg (c. 1128 † July 8, 1184 )
  • ∞ Dietrich III. of Cleves († 1202)
  • ∞ Arnold I. Berg, Count of Isenberg († 1209)
