Football at the 1968 Summer Olympics

In the XIX. 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City, a competition was held in football.

Hungary won the gold medal for the third time and has since after reading the IOC next UK record Olympic champion in football. With the bronze medal win by Japan for the first time an Asian team managed a medal win at an Olympic Football Tournament.

The amateur team of the German Football Association difference in qualifying against the amateur team from Great Britain, the GDR selection against the eventual silver medalist Bulgaria.

Venues were next to the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, the Jalisco Stadium in Guadalajara, Estadio Nou Camp Leon, and the Cuauhtemoc stadium in Puebla.

The match for third place at the Azteca Stadium hosts between Mexico and Japan saw 105,000 viewers, which is the highest number of audience in the history of the Olympic football tournaments. With hosts Mexico and also the first time a Central American team reached the semi-finals.
