The Estadio Jalisco was built in 1958-1960 and is located in Guadalajara, the second largest city in Mexico. On the occasion of the three major football tournaments in their own country, the Football World Cup 1970, the Football World Cup 1986 and the Confederations Cup in 1999, the stadium has been modernized several times. Since the last redesign, the Estadio Jalisco is a pure -seater stadium with a capacity of 56 713 seats. Thus, it is named after the Aztec Stadium (about 110,000 ) and the Olympic Stadium ( 72 449 ), the third largest stadium in Mexico and the largest stadium in Mexico outside of Mexico City. Previously there were 15 games in the Estadio Jalisco, of which 10 with the Brazilian national football team. More World Cup games ( 19), it was only at the Azteca Stadium.

History

Until the establishment of the Estadio Jalisco is the Parque Felipe Martínez Sandoval was (also known as Parque Oblatos and Parque Oro because he was in the neighborhood Oblatos and the property of the Club Oro ) is the largest stadium in the city of Guadalajara. It not only served the crew of club Oro, owned the stadium as home ground, but also the two big clubs of this city, Atlas and Chivas. Due to the rapid growth of the capital of the Mexican state of Jalisco, and the increasing popularity of football, this stadium should, however, soon proved too small.

Neither Atlas nor Chivas but had the financial resources to expand or even to be able to afford their own stadium with a correspondingly high spectator capacity stadium. This should Alberto Alvo, the then President of Atlas, but not prevent, pursue his dream of owning a stadium. His intention, he announced at a meeting at the Hotel Morales on October 8, 1954. Because it but did not succeed to find an investor for his ambitious project, the plan had to be postponed again indefinitely.

His project he never lost despite various setbacks, but out of sight. Finally, he managed to convince the board members of neighboring clubs Chivas and Oro by the need for a larger and more comfortable stadium. In this way, in 1956 the non-profit organization established specifically to finance and maintenance of the stadium was named " Clubes Unidos de Jalisco AC" (United Clubs of Jalisco ), which was based on the three soccer clubs equally.

From the City of profit association acquired a correspondingly large area in the district of Independencia on the northern outskirts of Guadalajara. Construction began on July 26, 1958, and went on for a period of exactly one and a half years. The official completion took place on January 24, 1960 with the consecration by the then Cardinal of Guadalajara, José Garibi Rivera. The official inauguration took place exactly one week later, on January 31, 1960, with staging of the encounter between Atlas and San Lorenzo de Almagro of Argentina instead. It was the first match of the first tournament, which was played in the new stadium: the Torneo Pentagonal de Occidente, the five tournament of the West, on which the three indirectly involved in the stadium clubs Atlas, Chivas and Oro as well as guests of the teams of San Lorenzo de participated Almagro and from São Paulo FC of Brazil.

Compared to the older Parque Oro offered the Estadio Jalisco modernity, comfort and progress. On the occasion of the discharged in Mexico FIFA World Cups of 1970 and 1986 and the Confederations Cup in 1999, the stadium has been modernized several times. For the 1970 World Cup, the upper part was built, reaching a significantly higher audience capacity. For the 1986 World Cup a fundamental transformation and modernization of technical equipment have been made. On the occasion of the Confederations Cup 1999 VIP and press boxes were constructed and fully modernized the dressing rooms.

The " Clubes Unidos de Jalisco AC" occurred in the 1970s with the University of Guadalajara team still with a fourth member. The Presidency of the nonprofit association for the construction and maintenance of the stadium switches to an annual basis between the member clubs.

Chivas Guadalajara has left the stadium in late July 2010. Their last match took place on Tuesday, 27 July 2010, held as part of the semi-final first-leg match at the Copa Libertadores against Universidad de Chile (1:1). Meanwhile, Chivas resides in the newly built Estadio Omnilife in the neighboring city of Zapopan.

1970 World Cup

Of the total of 32 games of the 1970 World Cup 8 were played at the Estadio Jalisco. This corresponds to a share of exactly 25 %. Only at the Estadio Azteca more games ( 10 in total) took place at this World Cup.

The Estadio Jalisco was the venue for all six games of the preliminary round Group 3 with Brazil, England, Romania and Czechoslovakia. The group winners and future world champion Brazil was also his quarter and semi-finals and had to leave Guadalajara only for the mounted at the Azteca stadium in Mexico City finals. (How the inhabitants of Guadalajara called ) The more than two-week stay of the Brazilian national team in Guadalajara led to a cordial connection between Tapatios and Brazilians.

1986 World Cup

The cordial contacts between the people of Guadalajara and the Brazilians who traveled enjoyed a pleasant refresher at this World Cup. Because Brazil was allowed to re- deliver all three group matches of the group stage at the Estadio Jalisco and stopped once again get the city for the playoffs as a group winner (Group D). The 4-0 win in the second round of the Seleção against Poland was not only the hitherto highest win a Brazilian national team in Guadalajara, but also their ninth victory in the ninth World Cup game at this point. In addition, the team had until then remained at the 1986 World Cup without conceding a goal yet.

Nevertheless, it was in the following quarter-final match against the French national team, led by Michel Platini not all experts as favorite. And rightly so, as we saw soon. Because France proved to be a formidable foe, so that developed a varied and extremely exciting game to the end. For many viewers, this game was the way to be the best match of the entire World Cup 1986. Though Careca already succeeded after 18 minutes of the 1-0 majority said the favorites but could Platini before the break ( 42 minutes ) to compensate. In the 75th minute was the world champion the renewed leadership of the Seleção on the slippers. But France's goalkeeper Joël Bats could parry the penalty shot of just substitute Zico. Because despite numerous opportunities, both here and no further hits, more fell, the decision had to be postponed to the subsequent penalty shoot-out. The first was Sócrates for Brazil - and Bats could be distinguished again. It was after goals 3:3 (at a outstanding penalty for Brazil and two more trials for France), as France captain Platini is putting the ball on the spot sweetly and the ball hard and placed in the direction of the gate bracket pounding. Carlos in goal for the Brazilians would have been no chance. But the ball went narrowly past the target. Everything was open again. But then also missed Júlio César, while Luis Fernández transformed. Brazil had for the first time lost a World Cup match in Guadalajara. The subsequent semi-final between Germany and France was the ( so far) last World Cup game that was able to experience the Estadio Jalisco. In that game, the French remained behind their expectations and the Germans won by an early goal from Andreas Brehme ( 9 ) and a late goal by Rudi Völler ( 90 ) all in all relatively confident 2-0. It was the first and only World Cup game a German football team in Guadalajara.

Confederations Cup 1999

At the discharge of the Confederations Cup in 1999, acted as hosts at the Mexico, the German national football team should 13 years later return to Guadalajara. But this time they left a downright desolate impression was defeated here even against Mexico's archenemy USA ( 0:2 ), which meant a disappointing third place in the preliminary round group and the early end sealed. Even the opening game had the German team surprisingly lost much with 0:4 against Brazil; precisely those national so that seems to have a subscription to the Estadio Jalisco in tournaments in Mexico. Including the two world championships in 1970 and 1986 and the Confederations Cup in 1999 together so denied the Brazilian selection ( Seleção ) in Mexico a total of 16 games, which were played at the Estadio Jalisco 14. Only the final two games of 1970 and 1999, to contest in the Aztec stadium in the world champion.

All six games of the preliminary round Group B found in the Estadio Jalisco instead, as the semi-finals of the group winner against the Second Group A ( in which Brazil loosely prevailed 8-2 against Saudi Arabia) and the match for third place ( which the U.S. 2-0 against Saudi Arabia won ). The Estadio Jalisco was next to the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, the only football temple in which took place the 16 games of this tournament in equal parts. As with all international tournaments in Mexico played the hosts almost exclusively at the Azteca Stadium and not even in Guadalajara. In contrast to the two world championships as the host respectively in the quarterfinals (1970 against Italy in Toluca and 1986 against Germany in Monterrey) fell by the wayside, Mexico was able to secure at this tournament with a heady 4-3 final win against Brazil the title.

Role models

Built in the late 1950s Estadio Jalisco was the only 1966 finished Estadio Azteca as a model. This can also be easily seen from a photo comparison of the two stages, covering at least see externally quite similar at first glance. Of course, the Aztec Stadium has an almost twice as large capacity and is in the grandstand area in nine different-sized sections (ranks ) divided.
