Fort White is a town in Columbia County in the U.S. state of Florida with 567 inhabitants (as of 2010).

Geography

Fort White lies around 25 kilometers south of Lake City and about 120 km west of Jacksonville.

History

Fort White was founded in 1870 and lived with the connection to the railroad in 1888, a short economic boom. Main economic activities of the town were the mining of Phospaterz and the cultivation of citrus fruits and cotton. By 1896, Fort White had grown to almost 2,000 inhabitants the second largest settlement in Columbia County. The economic decline began when the winter 1896/1897 extreme cold destroyed the citrus industry. The degradation of Phospaterz was set in 1910. The incidence of the Mexican boll weevil made ​​a few years later also for the end of the cotton production.
