Fowlerichthys

Fowlerichthys ocellatus

Fowlerichthys is a genus of fish in the family, the angler fish ( Antennariidae ). The genus was described in 1941 by Barbour and named in honor of the American zoologist Henry Weed Fowler, but synonymized 1973 by Monod & Le Danois with Antennarius. A revision of the angler fish by Rachel J. Arnold and the Armflosserexperten Theodore W. Pietsch, the genus was valid again and assigned to the species of the former Antennarius ocellatus group Fowlerichthys.

Features

All Fowlerichthys species have the typical for all anglers fish short, laterally flattened body and are relatively large with lengths from 28 to 38 cm. Only Fowlerichthys radiosus is substantially smaller with less than 8 cm in length. Fowlerichthys - five species have branched pelvic fin rays and 20 vertebrae, while all other anglers fish species have only one branched and four easy -fin rays, and all other anglers fish genera of the subfamily Antennariinae have 19 vertebrae. Known exceptions are only a single copy of Antennarius striatus, which had 18 vertebrae and a single copy of Antennarius commerson with 20 vertebrae.

Another feature of the genus is a special stage in her early youth, called " scutatus " Prejuvenil shape. This postlarvale stage is characterized by a shield-shaped, paired outgrowth of the fish skull, which crosses the gill cover, as well as an extension of the front edges of the Suspensoriums. This " scutatus " stage is so peculiar that it was originally described as a new genus and species ( Kanazawaichthys scutatus ).

System

Within the angler fish Fowlerichthys belongs to the subfamily Antennariinae and stands there in a sister group relation to the other three genera ( Antennarius, Antennatus & Histrio ), so the basal genus of the subfamily.
