Francesco Piccolomini (Jesuit)

Francesco Piccolomini (born 12 Oktoberjul / October 22 1582greg in Siena, .. † June 17, 1651 in Rome) was the 8th General of the Society of Jesus.

Life

Francesco Piccolomini, a member of a famous noble family, which also continues two popes, resigned on January 26, 1600 at the Jesuit order. He taught philosophy at the Roman College and was in the Indian mission. Again the long -standing and successful general of the order Mutio Vitelleschi high esteem, he had to stay in Rome and served as Secretary General of the Order. Later, he also served as a Visitor in Sicily, headed the order's College in Rome and served as Provincial of Naples, Milan, Rome and Venice. As Vincenzo Carafa, the 7th General of the Order, died on February 8, 1649, Piccolomini, the General Assembly of the Order on 21 December of the same year to their 8th General.

Franz Joseph Ritter von Buss called him in 1853 in his book " The Society of Jesus " a man of " invincible strength with great piety and humility." Influenced by the Enlightenment Karl Heinrich Lang writes in 1819 in his book " History of the Jesuits in Bavaria ", Piccolomini was " inflexible and stubborn ."

The Jesuit General was often sickly in his last years and died of a painful stone disease. At his death he ordered Goswin Nickel, about his next successor, for Generalatsverweser. Piccolomini died on June 17, 1651 in Rome. As the successor Aloysius Gottifredi was chosen.
