Franciszek Kareu

Franciscus Xavier Kareu (actually Franciszek Ksawery KARÜ, born December 10, 1731 in Orsha, † 30 July 1802 in Polotsk ) was from 1799 to 1801 and Vicar General from 1801 to 1802 Superior General of the Society of Jesus.

Life

He joined in 1754 in Vilnius in the Society of Jesus. As in 1772, the Jesuits by Pope Clement XIV was dissolved, this ban has not been implemented in Russian territories. The superiors of these territories were then to temporary Ordensgenerälen with the title of vicar-general, its center the city of Polotsk on the border of the Polish-Lithuanian Union of the Russian Empire. As 1798 Vicar General Gabriel Lenkiewicz, the second after the resolution on November 10, died, the General Assembly on February 1, 1799 Kareu his successor. In 1801 the Jesuits were allowed officially to elect a General in Russia. Kareu was confirmed in his office.

Francis Kareu died on 30 July 1802 in Polotsk.
