Orsha

Orsha ( Belarusian Орша; Russian Орша; Polish Оrsza, Belarusian unofficially Ворша / Worscha ) is on the Dnieper River ( Belarusian Dnjapro ), this industrial city in north-east of Belarus in the Wizebskaja Woblasz, just before the border to Russia with 125 347 inhabitants.

History

In the vicinity of the Orsha in 1514, named after the town battle between Poland - Lithuania and the Grand Duchy of Moscow was held.

During the Second World War, German troops began in Orsha with the establishment of Hitler's headquarters with the code name Olga. Construction began on July 1, 1943. The project was not completed and never used as Führer's headquarters. After the start of the Soviet offensive on June 21, 1944 Orsha was among the first reconquered cities, though only after days of fighting and almost complete destruction of the city.

Traffic

Orsha is a railway junction with crossing the railways of Warsaw - Minsk - Moscow and St. Petersburg - Zhlobin ( Homel / Kiev ), where direct trains between Saint Petersburg and Minsk, Orsha run over. A special feature of this railway junction is its wide variety of free plan linked links between its three stations.

The town is also on the trunk road Warsaw - Minsk - Moscow, part of the European route is 30. In Belarus, it carries the designation M 1 This road was the German -Soviet war as " The Runway " known. In the novel Heinz Konsalik has the fighting around Orsha a literary monument.
