Braslaw

Braslau or Braslaw (White Russian Браслаў, Braslau, Russian Браслав, Polish Braslaw; lithuanian Breslauja ) is a town with 9900 inhabitants ( 2009) in the Wizebskaja Woblasz in Belarus and administrative center of the homonymous Rajons Braslau.

History

The first mention of lying on the northern shore of the lake Driwjaty city dates back to 1065th The city was originally called the Principality of Polotsk Brjatschislawl and was named after the then ruler of Polotsk, a grandson of Vladimir the Great.

Braslau has a castle, which is dated to the period 1050-1200. There are also ruins of a church from the 12th century. Braslau belonged to Poland - Lithuania before it came to Russia in 1795. 1921, there was polish and fell in 1939 to the Soviet Union. Germany took it during the Second World War in 1941 until the Red Army reconquered 1945. Russian it remained until the independence of Belarus, 1991, see History of Belarus.
