François Rabbath

François Rabbath ( born March 12, 1931 in Aleppo ) is a French composer and double bass player of Syrian origin.

Life and work

Rabbath was born into a musical family. He had six brothers and three sisters; the age of 13 he discovered the double bass, as one of his brothers brought an instrument home and allowed him to experiment with it. When the family moved to Beirut in Lebanon, he found an old copy of Edouard Nanny's bass school in a tailor shop and began to teach on the basis of the book, the games themselves (which was easy, since he could not read sheet music yet mastered the French language ). After six years in Beirut, he had saved enough money to leave for Paris, where he wanted to study at the Paris Conservatory. Despite a very short preparation time he passed the audition sample of all participants as Best. His stay at the Conservatoire, however, was short-lived, as he soon realized that he was not only the other students but also the faculty technically advance.

In Paris, he began his living as a companion for musicians such as Jacques Brel, Charles Aznavour, Gilbert Becaud, Michel Legrand and earn some more. In 1963 he recorded his first solo album Bass Ball ( re-released the album as a result New Sound of Jazz).

From 1964 he began to compose music for film and theater. At the same time he began, first in France, then to play solo concerts throughout Europe. His American debut was in 1975 in Carnegie Hall.

1978 Rabbath met the American composer and bassist Frank Proto, with whom he has recorded the album Four Scenes after Picasso ( 2005). 1980 asked the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra Proto to write for Rabbath a solo concert Concerto No.. 2 for Double Bass and Orchestra, which was premiered in 1981 in Cincinnati. Two years later the Houston Symphony asked Proto to write another work for Rabbath; The Fantasy for Double Bass and Orchestra celebrated in 1983 in Houston premiere. Rabbath led the work since then on around the globe. Their third collaboration, Carmen Fantasy, was conceived as a work for double bass and piano; Rabbath was again first in Cincinnati in July 1991 with Proto as companions on the piano.

Rabbath is regarded as one of the great virtuoso on the double bass. He has a four-volume Nouvelle technique de la contrebasse written, which is not different from the school of Franz Simandl only in the use of the gripping hand, but also in the special attention to the sheet guide.
